National Institutes of Health Clinical Center

Research

Our faculty and fellows conduct conceptual and empirical research into a wide range of bioethics issues. Housed in the NIH Clinical Center, we strive to take advantage of our unique environment; scholarship often arises out of ethics consultations or interactions with investigators, patients and clinicians. Our department prides itself on intellectual rigor, interdisciplinary collaboration and a collegial spirit.

The department's research portfolio aims to address bioethical issues that are important, controversial or unresolved. The goal of our conceptual research is to produce rigorous philosophical and conceptual analyses that can serve as the foundational "basic science" of the bioethics field. The goal of our empirical research is to engage in rigorous investigation and data collection on strategic questions where quantitative analysis can help inform an active debate. Our research is published in high-impact journals relevant to multiple disciplines, including philosophy, law, medicine, and policy.

Below is a schematic outlining the areas of focus for the Department’s current scholarly research. Visit the links at the top of each section for more information.
